The ancient city of Turkistan, Kazakhstan recently witnessed a powerful gathering of young voices determined to make a difference. From March 27-29, 2023, the UNFPA-Spotlight Central Asia Regional Debates Tournament brought together 50 passionate young people from across the region to engage in critical discussions about gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices. This groundbreaking event recognized the urgent need to address gender-based violence, a pervasive human rights violation with devastating consequences for individuals, families, and communities across Central Asia. Early marriage, bride kidnapping, and intimate partner violence are just some of the challenges faced by women and girls that the participants were eager to confront.

The tournament served as a dynamic platform for young people to deepen their understanding of gender-based violence, exploring its root causes and far-reaching impacts. Through lively debates, interactive workshops, and inspiring speeches, participants honed their communication and critical thinking skills, becoming equipped to advocate for change. The event fostered a sense of collaboration and knowledge exchange among youth from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, creating a strong network of advocates committed to ending gender-based violence in Central Asia.

The debates themselves were a highlight, with teams engaging in thoughtful discussions on topics ranging from gender-based violence prevention and gender equality to challenging harmful social norms. Interactive workshops provided participants with valuable training on effective communication and advocacy strategies. I

The First Regional Debates Tournament was a resounding success, marking a significant step towards empowering Central Asian youth to become agents of change in the fight against gender-based violence. By amplifying their voices and fostering their commitment, the event has ignited a powerful movement for a brighter future where all women and girls can live free from violence.
