Astana, Kazakhstan 26 October 2018 – Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Mr. Dereje Wordofa has framed the debate on “Leaving no one Behind through Primary Health Care (PHC): what does it mean in the 21st century?”.

“Stronger Primary Health Care offers all the entry points to the multi-sectoral approach necessary to promote health and well-being – opening the door to education, social services, nutrition, water and sanitation,” said Mr. Wordofa.

“The renewed Primary Health Care vision commits to address the barriers that prevent young people to access quality information and services that can transform them into the effective engine of human capital of their countries, assuring their inclusion in the workforce and monitoring of PHC performance,” said Dereje Wordofa.

The Astana Declaration on Primary Health Care was signed yesterday and it defines four key areas for further work: 1) empowering people to take ownership of their health and health care; (2) making bold political choices for health; (3) putting public health and primary care at the centre of Universal Health Coverage; and (4) aligning partner support to national policies, strategies and plans.
